Escape the City – head to Liwa

Want to escape the city? Want to see the real desert of Abu Dhabi? Liwa is the place to go!

The Drive

A few months ago me and some friends drove off into the desert to climb the Moreeb Dunes in Liwa, Abu Dhabi. This dune is the largest in the UAE and it is also where parts of the new Star Wars movie was filmed! It takes about 2 hours from Abu Dhabi to get to the Moreeb Dune but the roads are very good and you’ll hardly pass by another car, just make sure you fill up on petrol before you go as petrol stations are few and far between! When you start to get close to the dune the roads become covered in sand you’ll have to drive very carefully, we did have to get out and push the car to safety!

I swear it looks bigger in person

Wait til Winter

We didn’t time our climb very well, we did it in the middle of June for sunset during Ramadan! I know, it sounds so stupid! I’ll admit it was the hardest thing I’ve probably ever done too! The dune itself is 300 metres high with a 50 degree incline and I am not the fittest of girls! I will say that surprisingly the sand was not very hot which was great because we ended up climbing bare feet and on our hands and knees caveman style! It was still quite hot out as you can imagine for mid June in the UAE but I really don’t believe the heat had much of an effect on it! I didn’t feel overly hot, I just felt exhausted from the climb. It was like doing hundreds and hundreds of mountain climbers and still never getting any closer to the top.

Take your time

One of our many mistakes was rushing too much at the start, we practically ran up the first 20 or 30 steps. After that we slowed it right down taking about 10 to 15 steps at a time and then a break. The first two thirds are the toughest with the crazy 50 degree incline. After that it gets much easier. Confession time, I actually gave up after I got two thirds up! The girls went on without me and I lay defeated in the sand. I was about to head back down but something came over me and I decided to keep on climbing all by myself and I made it to the top. A very proud moment for me!

Snap lots of pics

Once at the top, the pain of climbing was all forgotten. The sunset over the dunes was just magical. We were all suddenly bursting with energy running around and taking loads of pictures. And make sure to take lots of pictures to prove your accomplishment to everyone.

So my advice? Don’t do what I did! Do it in the winter and definitely take your time. We ended up spending an hour and a half getting up but it was so worth it. Do you think you’re up for the challenge? Let me know if you plan on making the trip! Thanks so much for reading. Check me out on bloglovin’ here and follow me on instagram here.

Beautiful pictures! The Middle East fascinates me and I had always been wondering about the UAE. Like, you always hear about Dubai and Abu Dhabi but those cities are in the desert and I never heard of anyone actually going to the desert there! So it’s great to see that some people DO go out exploring stuff besides those mega modern cities.
